Expansion Card Insertion Procedures
The S571 can be purchased with a variety of optional Expansion Cards that are normally inserted in the expansion
bays on the front panel of the unit when it is built at the factory. Expansion Cards can also be purchased
separately and inserted by field technicians after the unit has been installed in the field. When doing this, there are
some specific precautions and steps that must be followed in a specific order when inserting Expansion Cards in
the field:
The field technician must take precautions to ensure he/she is electrically grounded so as not to damage
the Expansion Card circuit board, or the main circuit board of the unit. Follow normal Electrostatic
Discharge (ESD) procedures for handling electronics per IPC-610.
The Expansion Card should remain in its protective ESD bag until it is time to actually insert it into the
expansion bay.
Note:
Because the S571 is a power distribution device, it is important that Expansion Cards are able to be
inserted or removed without disrupting the flow of power through the power outputs. Therefore, the S571 has
been built with the ability to turn the processor off while leaving the power outputs on. Follow these
instructions exactly to insert or remove an Expansion Card.
1. Press the Reset button for approximately 5 seconds and the left serial I/O port LEDs on the front panel will
turn off. This indicates that the processing part of the S571 is off. Note that power will continuously be
supplied to the power outputs, so any devices connected to the power outputs will not be affected.
2. If inserting an Expansion Card into a previously unoccupied bay, remove the two screws for the cover plate
and set the plate aside. Otherwise, remove the two screws that secure the existing card in the bay, and
carefully slide the existing card out.
3. Remove the Expansion Card from its protective ESD bag and slide it into the plastic rails inside the
expansion bay. Visually confirm that the card is in both rails and properly aligned.
4. Push the card until it is fully inserted in its slot.
5. Replace the two screws previously removed so the Expansion Card is held securely in the bay.
6. Place the Expansion Card label (if provided) on the back panel directly above or below the Expansion
Card, taking care to align the markings on the label with appropriate I/O points or ports on the card.
Note:
If inserting a Wireless Modem Expansion Card, screw the rubber GMS antenna (or cable to an
external antenna) to the SMA connector on the modem. Do not proceed to the next step without an
antenna connected to the modem.
7. Press the Reset button for approximately 5 seconds and the left serial I/O port LEDs on the front panel will
turn on. 90 seconds later the unit will beep twice indicating it has rebooted.
If the Expansion Card being inserted is a wireless modem or a 4-port serial card, it will automatically
be detected and utilized by the S571.
If the Expansion Card is an EventSensor card and there was not another EventSensor type Expansion
Card in this bay before inserting this one, the S571 will automatically detect and slot it correctly.
If the Expansion Card is an EventSensor card and there was another EventSensor type Expansion
Card in this bay before inserting this one, go to the EventSensor Setup Menu, select the previous card
(it will still be displayed in the menu) then select the "Clear Settings for this EventSensor“ option to
clear it. Return to the command line and type
RESTART
. The S571 will restart in approximately 20
seconds, at which time you can go to the EventSensor Setup Menu and see that the new Expansion
Card is displayed correctly in the slot.
