Safety Guidelines
Review these safety guidelines before making your fiber-optic connections.
CAUTION
Only Service Personnel are allowed to connect fiber-optic cables to
the equipment.
CAUTION
Risk of invisible laser radiation!
Invisible laser radiation may be emitted from the end of an untermi-
nated optical fiber connector or receptacle when the aperture inter-
locks are defeated.
Never look directly into an optical fiber connector or unterminated
receptacle during service operations by using optical instruments,
unless you are absolutely certain that no laser radation is being emit-
ted from the receptacle or the fiber.
Ensure that you are grounded with a wrist strap or equivalent while
connecting the fiber-optic cables.
NOTICE
Risk of damage to the network ports of channel modules!
To avoid serious damage to the network ports of the
channel modules, you must ensure that the specified
maximum optical input power of the channel modules is
not exceeded. Damage resulting from input power levels
that are too high can only be repaired at the factory and is
not covered by the warranty.
NOTICE
Risk of optical connector damage!
With no power applied, always inspect and clean all
fiber-optic connector plugs thoroughly, before plugging
them into a module. Contamination can degrade optical
performance, and in some cases, damage fiber optic
connectors permanently. For details, see
Inspecting Fibers and Ports” on p. 293
To prevent contamination always cover any connector
receptacles that are not in use with protective plugs. Keep
protective caps on unplugged fiber-optic connector plugs.
