Building an Earthing Conductor
Tools and Parts Required
•
Earthing conductor:
o
minimum cross sectional area of 5.26 mm
2
(10AWG) for the 9HU shelf
or minimum cross sectional area of 3.31 mm
2
(12AWG) for the 7HU
shelf (SH7HU, SH7HU-R) and 1HU shelf types
o
solid or stranded copper conductor,
o
yellow or green-yellow insulating
•
Appropriate terminal connector on one side of the earthing conductor to be
attached to the shelf’s earthing contacts:
•
Ring lug terminal for bolt size M4 (hole diameter of 4 mm to
6 mm) or
•
Two-hole lug (0.25 inch holes on 0.625 centers) e.g.
Thomas&Betts54205) or
•
6.3 mm Faston wire receptacle, female type
•
Appropriate terminal connector used for the rack’s earth point that matches
the terminal connector on the earthing conductor
•
Self-retracting pocket tape measure
•
Wire cutter
•
Wire stripper
•
Wire crimper
These parts and tools should be present before beginning the procedure.
Use the following procedure to build an individual earthing conductor.
Procedure
Step 1
By measuring, determine the conductor length required for the shelf.
Step 2
Use the wire cutter to cut the corresponding conductor length off the
coil of wire.
Step 3
Use the wire stripper to remove enough of the insulation from the con-
ductor end that connects to the earthing terminal of the shelf.
WARNING
Only Service Personnel or a qualified/licensed electrician are allowed
to assemble an individual earthing conductor with wire terminals on
both ends.
WARNING
Risk of electric shock!
In some countries local regulations might apply. Also check and
follow local codes and requirements.
Ensure that all strands of a stranded wire enter the terminal
connection!
