Step 4: Create a trap to compensate
for misregistration on press
Misregistration can cause gaps between
colors on the final output when colors
printed from separate plates overlap or
adjoin one another. To compensate for
potential gaps between colors in art-
work, print shops use a technique called
trapping to create a small area of
overlap (called a trap) between two
adjoining colors. See

Illustrator traps artwork two ways. The
first method—the
Trap filter
—automati-
cally creates a trap for artwork. The
filter works with simple objects and
objects whose parts can be selected and
trapped individually. The filter is not
suitable for complex artwork; for exam-
ple, it does not work with gradients,
patterns, placed images, or strokes.
