Spacing characters with auto-kerning
To use a font’s kerning information to
space characters better, you can select
the Auto- Kerning option in the
General
Preferences dialog box or in the Charac-
ter palette. Many fonts contain informa-
tion about the spacing of character
pairs; for example, the spacing between
an A and a W often is less than the spac-
ing between an A and an F.
Auto-kerning is off by default because
using the feature slows the program’s
performance. When Auto-Kerning is
selected in the General Preferences dia-
log box, auto-kerning is applied to new
type you create in any document. When
selected in the Character palette, the
Auto-Kerning option applies auto-kern-
ing to newly created or selected type in
the current document. The last chosen
option remains in effect for your work
session and is saved with the document.
For the best performance, leave Auto-
Kerning off in the Character palette until
you have finished creating your type.
Then select the type and apply auto-
kerning to it.
