When a hard drive is 'mounted' to a computer, that means the
computer has established a communications link with it. When
you unmount the drive, the communications link is severed and
the computer can no longer access it—even if the drive is still
powered on.

Windows users
1. In the Windows Taskbar click the
Safely Remove
icon (the icon with
the green arrow).
. Select the Drive form the pop-up list. After a few seconds Windows
will give you a message that it is safe to remove the device.
. Click
OK
. You can then safely turn off the Drive.
