Communication protocols
M14815-3 v13
Each IED is provided with several communication interfaces enabling it to connect
to one or many substation level systems or equipment, either on the Substation
Automation (SA) bus or Substation Monitoring (SM) bus.
Available communication protocols are:
•
IEC 61850-8-1 communication protocol
•
IEC/UCA 61850-9-2LE communication protocol
•
LON communication protocol
•
SPA communication protocol
•
IEC 60870-5-103 communication protocol
•
DNP 3.0 communication protocol
Several protocols can be combined in the same IED.

IEC 61850-8-1 communication protocol allows vertical communication to HSI
clients and allows horizontal communication between two or more intelligent
electronic devices (IEDs) from one or several vendors to exchange information and
to use it in the performance of their functions and for correct co-operation.
GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented Substation Event), which is a part of IEC
61850–8–1 standard, allows the IEDs to communicate state and control
information amongst themselves, using a publish-subscribe mechanism. That is,
upon detecting an event, the IED(s) use a multi-cast transmission to notify those
devices that have registered to receive the data. An IED can, by publishing a
GOOSE message, report its status. It can also request a control action to be directed
at any device in the network.

shows the topology of an IEC 61850–8–1 configuration. IEC 61850–8–
1 specifies only the interface to the substation LAN. The LAN itself is left to the
system integrator.
